"This is a Dangerous Junction" |
We have continually told our city officials about the dangerous junction at Dumbreck road / Dumbreck Avenue, yet requests from residents and local councillors for improved traffic control at this junction have been continually ignored by the city council roads and traffic department.
We were told this access road to the M77 and M8 motorways still did not qualify for improved traffic control even considering the area is now the home of Hazelwood School the Education Departments new multi-million Special needs School.
According to Robert Booth Executive Director of Land and Environmental Services “ Traffic signals were considered during the early stages of the schools development project but dropped out of the reckoning after we received information that indicated that traffic flow to and from the school would be intermittent in contrast to most other schools.”
As you can see the only consideration in this matter seems to be traffic volume and takes no account of the safety of local residents or the children coming and going to homes and school using this dangerous junction.
With the aid of our Community Councillors it has been explained to the local authorities that as Dumbreck Road bends at both sides of this junction and with the increased volume of traffic on this road, residents are fearful and anxious when using this junction and accidents will continue to happen. |
Mosspark Drivers 'Safe at last' |
A new set of traffic lights are in operation at the junction of Mosspark Boulevard and Bellahouston Drive to replace the badly positioned lights that seemed to be causing accidents to occur there.
The lights were turned on by Councillor Mathew Kerr and David Cameron who is chairman of Mosspark Community Council and who both have fought to have the old dangerous junction made safe for drivers and pedestrians alike. It must be said that when brought to the attention of Glasgow City Council’s Roads and Traffic section they agreed that this junction could be made safer and acted promptly in this matter before more serious accidents occurred.
We could use a duo like this at Dumbreck Court maybe then we might get lights for our junction at Dumbreck Avenue / Dumbreck Road as seen in the item below.
|
An Exit Strategy for Trapped Residents |
With hundreds of people living in our community and with only one entry and exit point for all the cars, vans and trucks into Dumbreck Court, it is extremely surprising that there are no traffic lights installed at Dumbreck Avenue / Dumbreck Road.
Getting out of Dumbreck Avenue is becoming extremely difficult and sometimes dangerous owing to the congestion on Dumbreck Road. Drivers are stopping on the Yellow Box and continually blocking this only exit and this difficulty is compounded with a restricted view of the on-coming traffic when trying to exit and has become a hazard to people living here and as we have recently seen, a number of collisions have taken place here.
This situation is even more worrying now that the school buses are using this dangerous junction taking children to Hazelwood School as this is their only entry and exit point.
I suggest this is an accident waiting to happen and now that there is a new school in our community we can only hope that Mr. Gillespie head of Roads and Traffic for Glasgow City Council’s Land and Environmental Services does not delay too long in considering the proposal put to him from our Dumbreck Community Councillor John Corbett, John Grant Vice Chair of the Dumbreck Tenants Association (DTRA) and Councillor Shaukat Butt, as any delay in this matter may be fatal for this community.

59 Bus Timetable Restored |
I'm happy to inform you that the threat of a reduced service of the 59 bus has been avoided with the help of Mosspark Community Council. The 59 will now run as normal every 20 minutes due to a grant received for the route by first bus.
The route of the bus will travel from Ruchill (Curzon Street) to Mosspark Square (Mosspark) Via the City Centre. This timetable is valid from the 17th of February 2008 till 27th of September 2008 after this the timetable might change slightly but there should be no further cuts to this much needed service from Mosspark to the city centre for our tenants and residents of both Mosspark and Dumbreck.

Spar (Mosspark Drive) Respond to Customer Complaints |
The management of Spar on Mosspark Drive have responded to the item on our website and wish to assure customers that in future any similar incident of a cash machine breakdown were complaints are made will be dealt with by staff immediately and courteously.
The Management of Spar on Mosspark drive apologise for any inconvenience to customers and hope to continue serving the community as they have done for the past 15 years.

|
No Community Spirit at Spar |
A number of customers of the Spar store on Mosspark Drive have complained about shabby treatment at the hands of the manager and employees of this store.
The problem started when the cash machine attached to the store malfunctioned and began keeping the cards of the customers, this was reported to the store and customers were told it was nothing to do with the store and to go away and call their own bank and report it.
When it was suggested to the store that they pull down the shutter of the Cash machine this was refused, and when asked to put a note on the machine to stop their customers losing their cards this was also rejected as none of their business. (Hardly in the spirit of Spar's moto)
It was only because of a group of community spirited residents that other customers were saved from losing their cards in the faulty clydesdale bank machine, the residents insisted that the shutter be brought down, this was eventually done 'reluctantly' by an employee of the store.
The unreasonableness of this attitude to customers of the store, brings the good name of Spar Scotland into disrepute these customers are after all using the machine to obtain cash to buy goods from store itself.
A Marketing Representative from Spar Scotland said ' this complaint will be investigated and dealt with immediately as the suggestions made to the store seem to be quite reasonable'
The quicker the sloppy management of this store is dealt with by SPAR/ CJ Lang the better for Dumbreck and Mosspark customers and better for Spar's good name itself. |
The Choice of Rendering for the
Dumbreck Court Multi's |
Mosspark Housing Association invited all tenants and residents to a Public Meeting on Wednesday the 12th of March 2008 at Hazelwood School. The purpose of the meeting was to bring all tenants up to date with the progress made by Mosspark Housing, Wates (the Contractor) and your Tenants Association (DTRA) who represented the tenants at every meeting with the contractors.
The meeting allowed the tenants to choose the final layout of the rendering and now this choice has been made as you can see option 2 was chosen for the rendering of the blocks.
Wates the contractor who will carry out the rendering of the multi's will be on site by August/September of this year
During this time work will begin on Blocks 20 and 40 this will involve the installation of mast climbers after this cladding the Multi's with insulated render will begin, this will make both blocks warmer thus reducing tenants and residents fuel bills, the work will be carried out by a company named ‘WATES’ this company will also supply digital connectivity by installing a new communal receiver on the buildings and new digital television access points in your living room and a bedroom, tenants will then be able to acquire for themselves a satellite television package.
Wates will also install a new entrance to both blocks, new fire escapes will be fitted and the old one’s removed without loss of access. |
Compensation? |
I understood 'Compensation' to be something given as an equivalent for some loss? It seems this is not so, at least for Glasgow City Council Land and Environmental Services, who have informed us that the compensation awarded to Dumbreck Court will not be spent in Dumbreck but in Mosspark? The money will be used to upgrade the playpark at the junction of Mosspark Drive and Mosspark Boulevard, I understand that this little playarea was due for renovation but it seems GCC LES dont want to pay for it out of their own pockets they wish to grab the meagre amount of money awarded to the children of Dumbreck Court to give them a new play area of their own, as their local playarea and greenspace were removed due to the building of Hazelwood School.
It has been explained to GCC LES the unreasonableness of this dubious decision, quite aside from the fact that the children of Dumbreck Court could rarely use the Mosspark playarea, there being no safe crossing point near the park area, and a number of accidents have already occurred on crossing this road, which the children would have to do to reach this proposed playarea.
An urgent meeting has been scheduled with the Landscape Design Manager Rachel Smith to discuss our objections (not to Mosspark's new playarea who's upgrade is much needed) but to how it's being paid for, and the fact it cannot be used effectively by children at Dumbreck Court!
Attending the meeting along with your tenants association will be our local councillors who have supported us superbly throughout this issue especially Councillor Shaukat Butt who helped arrange this meeting. Our view is also supported by Dumbreck Community Council and indeed Mosspark Community Council.

The Special General Meeting |
A Special meeting was held between Dumbreck Tenants and Residents Association and the manager of South West Shared Services (Bill Pearch) the Special meeting discussed the lack of 12 hour Concierge cover at both Dumbreck and Jura courts. Also in attendance at the public meeting were Mosspark Housing Association and tenants and residents from Jura Court
At the meeting Mr Pearch was presented with a few hundred completed questionnaire's from tenants of both Jura and Dumbreck showing exactly how tenants and residents felt about the situation.
Mr Pearch seemed to be suggesting our 12 hour day shift Concierge service was a luxury the GHA was no longer willing to pay for and that if we wished to keep the service 'that tenants and residents are already paying for' we should be charged extra?
As we tried to explain to Mr Pearch who obviously knows little about the concierge service, was that if this service is reduced to less than 12 hours the sought after houses at Dumbreck and Jura will deteriorate as will the new investment the GHA are putting into these buildings, as well as going against GHA's own policy of building communities our communities will become run down and cease to be viable and to stop this the GHA will then need to upgrade our sites to 24 hour cover costing even more!
The Dumbreck Tenants and Residents Association will not agree to a reduction in service and wish the 12 hour service being paid for by all tenants to remain in operation at Dumbreck Court, of course we would also agree to the buildings being upgraded to 24 hour cover!!!
When Mr Pearch has reviewed the situation with his superiors and held discussions with our LHO he has told us he will contact the Association formally, and we will keep you informed as to developments.
UPDATE:
Here is an extract from a letter From the General Manager South West Shared Services that was sent since the Special Meeting, to our Chairman William McColl, stating "..I just want to make plain that there is no proposal or intention to reduce the service that is currently offered to residents of Dumbreck and Jura Courts, and I had no intention of implying that there were going to be or might be. This is not the case." And your tenants association will ensure it remains so!

Tenants Association Updates |
Your tenants and residents association has attended the quarterly meeting of the Dumbreck Community Council, also attending the meeting where 2 local councillors and our MSP. We sought the assistance of the community council on a number of issues including a Puffin Crossing (Pedestrian User-Friendly Intelligent crossing) we think should be installed on Mosspark Boulevard as we now have a Special needs school within Dumbreck Court, and a crossing like this would allow the pupils and carers to move more freely and securely around their new community.
We have also demonstrated a great and immediate need for traffic lights to be installed at the entrance to Dumbreck Avenue from Dumbreck Road where at the moment, cars and school buses are finding it almost impossible to both enter or leave Dumbreck Court safely without a long delay as the traffic on Dumbreck Road is constant.
You will have noticed a questionnaire has been put through you letter box about the concierge service who keep our community looking good. This questionnaire does not reflect on the concierge service itself, nor even on our local housing office, but on the GHA who have recently increased the workload to this service whom we believe have ceased to be concierge and have now become all but cleaners, and tenants needs are being neglected.
We have had a meeting with the General Manager of Southwest Local Shared Services where he suggested our concierge service could be reduced? Since this meeting he has not provided the extra resources required i.e. temporary extra manpower to clean the additional 42 corridors and landings once cleaned by tenants themselves, that the GHA has now taken responsibility for but they do not wish to supply resourses for? (where's the shared in 'shared' services?)
So return those questionnaires and watch the boards in the foyers for a public meeting to which (Bill Pearch) the GM SWLSS will be present and you can put your views to him personally

Dumbreck Court Welcomes New Neighbours |
We are all happy to see that Hazelwood School is now open and in operation and is looking really good. The head teacher at the school is Monica McGeever the school is purpose built to house as many as 60 students with sensory and dual sensory impairments, supported by a compliment of 50 highly skilled staff.
There is still work to be done to the site inside, and some landscaping to be done outside but this should be completed quite quickly. As you will see from the flyers in the foyers of our buildings, the tenants and residents of Dumbreck Court are invited to an opening ceremony on Thursday 30th August at 6:00pm. I urge you to attend this ceremony in support of our new neighbours and get to know them, you may be interested to know that there is now a 50 Dumbreck Court which is the address of the new school.
So on behalf of the Tenants and Residents of Dumbreck Court our Association would like to offer a warm “WELCOME” to our new neighbours. see Evening Times report ...
UPDATE>>> Tenants and Residents attended the opening of the school and the turnout from the community even seemed to take the staff by surprise, extra seating had to be hurriedly brought from cupboards and elsewhere.
The function and the intention of the interior design of the school was explained to the community by the Head Teacher (Monica McGeever) tenants and residents were also given a tour of the school inside and out, and much praise was heaped on the designers, and the staff of the school. Some members of the Dumbreck Community have also signed up for voluntary work to help out at the school, all in all the ceremony went very well and the school is now well and truly part of our community!

Tenants Protests ignored by Education Services |
Our Tenants who gave up their secure parking facilities and even a toddlers play area to enable Education Services to build Hazelwood school have come to regret that decision, as the education dept are responsible for allowing Sir Robert McAlpine construction to move their Hutting Toilets and Generators into our car park under the protests of the tenants and contrary to an agreement made to tenants and Local Housing officials.
Mosspark Housing Association have supported the tenants in this matter and have held meetings with the Tenants association, Education Services and McAlpine with no success. DTRA called Nicola Sturgeon MSP and Councillor Allison Hunter for help and both came to Dumbreck Court for a meeting with the tenants Estate Co-ordinator and Housing Officer. Nicola called Education Services and spoke to Gil Carruth who refused to instruct McAlpine to move the items to the North Car Park stating time and cost as an excuse and was told that the attitude of Education Services and McAlpine Construction towards tenants was disgraceful, and would become an issue in itself.
We all want to see this project concluded but we will not accept being lied to, agreements being broken, and a total disregard for the wishes of the community they are guests of, so I have contacted a local newspaper and informed the GHA of this move, as we feel Tenant Participation gets suspended when dealing with the City Council and tenants are told to……. PERSEVERE! See image of Car Park..

Sir Robert McAlpine Apologises to tenants "We're Sorry!" |
At a meeting Friday 1st June 2007 the Dumbreck Tenants and Residents Association supported by Mosspark Housing Association confronted McAlpine Construction and their complete lack of consideration for the tenants and residents of Dumbreck Court.
At this meeting were representatives from Health and Safety, Education Services, Hazelwood School Architects, and a senior representative from McAlpine.
McAlpine agreed that proper consultation had not taken place and that neither tenants nor housing managers had been informed as to their plans to house materials from the school site in a fenced off area in the centre of the local community. This area was until recently the toddlers playpark which was converted to a car park to replace the parking spaces removed to allow access to the new Hazelwood school.

The local community who support the building of this new school, have been surrounded by construction for a year with little complaint, but when McAlpine began storing heavy materials in the centre of the community surrounded by a badly constructed fence (which was reinforced on the morning before a visit from health and safety inspectors) without consulting the tenants and residents caused understandable anger, towards this inconsiderate act, by the managers of the Dumbreck School Site.
Even when faced with this intransigence and disregard by Sir Robert McAlpine (who are members of the Considerate Contractors Scheme) the Tenants Association and Housing Association understand the restriction of space on the school site and have agreed under conditions, to allow this storage to continue for a further 10 Days on the basis that no further material will be added to this "temporary storage area" and that the Local housing manager be kept informed.
The Dumbreck Tenants and Residents association are sadened by the fact that this entire incident could have been avoided, with even the slightest consultation with the community!
We would like to thank Mosspark Housing Association's Andy Elliott and Dennis Donnelly for their continued support for the tenants in this matter, we are also grateful for the support and advice of the Dumbreck Community Council and our Councillor Shaukat Butt.

Cleanup at Dumbreck Court |

Roy Reekie (centre)

Councillor Shaukat Butt

|
A team of volunteers who take pride in their community came together to cleanup the litter dropped by local and passing litter bugs and irrisponsible pet owners letting their dogs foul the area. The team consisted of members of your Tenants Association with the help of Mosspark Housing Association DENNIS DONNELLY and ROY REEKIE from Glasgow City Council. We were supported in our efforts by our own Labour Councillor "SHAUKAT BUTT"
getting his hands dirty for our community, and we are glad of his support for our area!
"Our cleanup was organised by FIONA MACIVER who lead by example to highlight the importance of keeping Dumbreck Court clean so that it offers a safe area where children can play and it can be a pleasant environment to take pride in and be enjoyed by all members of our community.
Finally, we found that the work of the team was appreciated by an elderly local tenant who came running out to thank us for our efforts and provided us with a packet of biscuits for our tea! "A welcome end to a succesful cleanup!!! " |

During 2008/9 work will begin on Blocks 20 and 40 this will involve cladding the Multi's with insulation to make both blocks warmer and thus reducing tenants and residents fuel bills, the work will be carried out by a company named Wates this company will at the same time install digital connectivity and the tenants will be able then to acquire a satellite television package.
Options for the colours and design of the cladding will be offered as a choice to the tenants at a meeting to be held at a future date, the tenants association will keep you informed as will Wates and Mosspark Housing Association . |

Night Service Manager meets tenants! |

Charlie Mochan (NSM)

The daytime Concierge service at Dumbreck Court functions from 8:00am in the morning till 8:00pm in the evening if by chance, assistance is needed by a tenant that the concierge would usually deal with (if it cannot wait till the dayshift returns) you can ask the mobile patrol lads to help! If they are not on site you can call 0800 595 595 and you will be connected to a 24 hour site and they will arrange for the mobile patrol to stop by and assist with the problem.
The Night Service Manager “Charlie Mochan” attended our public meeting to update the tenants association on the service provided, we were reliably informed that Dumbreck Court is receiving regular patrols from this much welcomed service and this will continue for the foreseeable future. |

Happy landings - or Cleaning Chaos? |
 |
|
Ever since the great and the wise of the GHA proposed that all 'Landings' and 'Backstairs' at Dumbreck Court were to be cleaned by existing concierge staff, there has been a downturn in the cleanliness of both. This huge task in itself was made worse initially by the lack of manpower and facilities to do the job? Some tenants have continued to clean the landings despite this edict from on-high and their Landings continue to look good! Your Tenants association together with your Housing officer (Dennis) and members of the concierge staff, are putting this situation to rights, and we should infact by now be seeing some improvement (taking into account the debris from the work on the new lifts) Click to see the Letter from Dennis Donnelly... |
